Viimeisimpänä puhdetyönä maalasin Kummastuskammariin liinavaate (tai aarre?) -arkun. Kuvat ovat 1200-luvulla tehdystä englantilaisesta Bestiary-käsikirjoituksesta "M. S. Bodley 746". Ostin englanninkielisen uudispainoksen tuosta keskiaikaisesta "eläinkirjasta". Yksi parhaista kirjoista pitkään aikaan! Esittelyssä ovat kaikki otukset sammakoista feeniks-lintuihin ja yksisarvisiin. Eläinten elintavoista kerrotaan aivan uskomattoman mielikuvituksellisia juttuja, ja kaikki ne tietysti symboloivat jotakin raamatullista totuutta. Yllä olevassa kuvassa näkyy arkun toisessa päädyssä olevat sammakot.

My last piece of work is a coffin for linen (or treasures?), which I painted with aquarelle. The pictures are from a medieval bestiary "M. S. Bodley " from 13th century England. I bought an English version book, which is absolutely fantastic. It tells about all kinds of creatures, from frogs to the Phoenix-bird and the unicorn. The extremely imaginary stories about their habits symbolize biblical truths. In the picture above, you see the frogs on the other end of the coffin.
Arkun kannen ulkopinnassa olevat käärmemäiset otukset ovat salamantereita, jotka vahingoittumatta uiskentelevat tulenlieskojen läpi. Arkun etusivulla on keskiaikaisen näkemyksen mukainen krokotiili, ja sisäkannessa olevien lintujen sanotaan kirjassa olevan nokikanoja. Aika valkoisia nokikanoiksi, mutta noilla miniatyyrimaalareilla ei useinkaan ollut mitään käsitystä maalaamiensa eläinten todellisesta ulkonäöstä, vaan kuvat tehtiin pelkän tekstin pohjalta.

The snake-like creatures on the outer surface of the lid are dea, or salamanders, who go trough fire without getting injured. On the front side there is a medieval-style crocodile. The birds on the inner side of the lid are said to be coots. Quite blond to be coots, but the medieval miniatyrists usually had no idea about the animals they were painting, they just made the illustrations after the texts.

Lattiatyöt ovat edistyneet. Alakerran lankkulattiat on lakattu. Keskikerroksen saliin on tulossa shakkiruutuinen lattia, ja makuuhuoneessa on bambusta tehty, kiiltäväksi lakattu lautalattia. Kunhan saisi nuo lattiat tehtyä, niin pääsisi tapetoimaan ja laittamaan väliseiniä. Ikkunaruudutkin on jo leikattu pleksistä.

The floor works are progressing. The plank floors on the first floor are varnished. The second floor bedroom has a varnished bamboo board floor, and the hall is getting a black and white chequered floor. As soon as I get the floors ready, I can start with the wall papers and the inner walls. The perspex window screens are already cut, just waiting to be installed.
